Topos US App Reviews
waste of money
all the maps I downloaded of my area were from the 60s and 70s. what am I suppose to do with a topo map of my city that hasnt been updated in 50yrs?
As someone who spends a fair amount of time in the deserts of Arizona, I appreciate a good topo map (and compass!). I bought this to be able to take a look at the maps Id dowloaded on my iPhone 3GS, but on my MUCH larger 26" screen. As a way to download USGS Topo Maps, its good. As a way to plan a hunt, which I was doing, not so much. Ive admittedly played with this for about 15 minutes, but Ive already got a list of things lacking/future improvements. They are: Intuitive controls: Can only zoom by clicking the =/- button. Kept spinning the mouse wheel to zoom and nothing would happen. Very frustrating after the first couple of times. Squeeze to zoom/unzoom support would be awesome. More functionality: The ability to stitch maps together into one large map would be spectacular. I can do this in my iPhone, but not here. Switching back and forth between the individual maps got very confusing, very quickly. I had no feel at all for how this particlular area of Arizona was oriented and no feel for how the individual maps fit together or were related to one another. Also, the ability to add waypoints or icons and plan routes would be great. Unlike some other reviewers, the map dates arent really an issue for me. The maps are made, maintained and updated by the federal government, not by the developer of this app. The developer has absolutely no control over this whatsoever. As long as I know the map was made and updated in, say, 1967, then Ill know to expect some differences between what I see on the ground and whats on the map. This is good for what it is, but with some added features it could be great.
I was disappointed to find out that New York State was missing. Other states missing; North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, and West Virginia. The maps that are loaded are good quality.
All of these maps (and more) are available for free from usgs.gov. Using this app is a bit more convenient than using the USGS website, but the maps are down-sampled. This makes it easier to pan around, but when you zoom in it doesnt have the fine detail anymore.
Diappointed to see that my state and many other states are not available for download. This issue needs to be addressed for this program to be useful
Nice Interface - But no Alaska Maps
I wanted to access Alaska topos quickly, but no Alaska maps are loaded in this version.
This app is pretty cool. Like the previous reviewer said, its a lot easier to maneuver than the Geological Surveys map downloader, so it saves you some time. The reason that I only gave it 3 stars is because it didnt really meet my expectations. I use topographic maps for backcountry hiking and I thought that I would at least be able to label destinations or add other text. All you can really do is zoom in and out. That being said, this app has major potential.
It is easier to download the USGS maps (which are free on the USGS site) but the application needs to have better graphics installed. The maps through the program are rather grainy when you get a close up idea of the map. If you just download the USGS map in the PDF format, and use the PDF viewer, it is clearer and more usable. It is nice to have this program, and it has potential, but as for the viewer part, it sort of is poor. Maybe the creators will make it so the maps are clearer at closer view, we shall see what future updates carry.
Has issues with Mt lion after upgrade
Great app, but after upgrade to Mt Lion, cant pan maps after zoom. Please fix. Thanks Brian
In Lion, this app worked very nicely. After upgrading to Mt. Lion, zooming is buggy at best, and I cant navigate through maps; Im stuck at the lower left corner. It will often freeze or hang and cause my fan to go haywire. Please fix these bugs/make it compatible with Mt. Lion! It is a great app when it works, but is crippled until it is fixed.
Topos crashes everytime you try to open it
Dont buy - it crashes everytime you try to open it
I just downloaded this app and found it to be exactly what I was looking for. It’s very simple, allowing you to easily find your topo map of interest, download it quickly and view it at different zoom levels. You also turn the map to view it from different perspectives. There’s not much more to it, but that’s what I was hoping to find.
want my $$$ back...
Crashes everytime I download a map, very limited options
Don’t buy! It only has a select number of locations and does not cover the entire state. I tried to find a map for Fitchburg, Massachusetts but there was not there. Waste of money, better to try to find images online. Very dissapointed.
Has potential but not quite there
Had all the maps that I wanted to see, but in the viewer I found that the resolution was not enough. Too grainy for close-up viewing.
